How Progressive Jackpots Grow, Pay Out and Reset
Follow a progressive jackpot from contributions to award and reset, and distinguish eligibility, fixed tiers, caps and must-hit-by conditions.

A jackpot meter keeps climbing, then suddenly drops to a smaller amount. That movement reflects the life of a prize pool: money enters under the game’s rules, a qualifying player triggers an award, and the pool starts again. To understand a progressive jackpot, follow three questions: where does the money come from, which plays qualify, and what actually triggers the prize?
Where does the money come from?
A common arrangement directs part of each qualifying wager into the pool. It does not put the entire wager there. The starting amount is called the seed, and an operator may fund it. White Hat Studios’ Jackpot Royale rules, for example, distinguish players’ contributions from the initial seed funded by the operator. The contribution rate, any separate charge and the way contributions are allocated depend on the version being played.
The pool may extend beyond the game in front of you. A local jackpot builds within a specified game or operator setup; a networked jackpot can receive contributions across participating games and sites. Evolution’s official Red Tiger overview describes the Daily Drop network’s shared pools. Other participants can therefore move a meter while you are not playing. Seeing the same game at two sites, however, does not establish that both use the same pool.
Past awards are not the current jackpot
A report of a past jackpot award is not a live pool balance. Its publication date may differ from the date of the win. Neither the reported amount nor the time since the last award tells you that another jackpot is due.
An award report alone does not establish how a prize is funded, how it resets or the probability of winning it. Check the game rules to distinguish a progressive prize from a fixed or preset event award.
Being eligible is only the first step
Check entry conditions before checking the trigger: eligible stakes, required options and permitted modes. Neither “always bet the maximum” nor “every bet qualifies equally” is a universal rule. The game’s own jackpot rules must establish which bets participate.
Once a play qualifies, the specified winning event must still occur. The Jackpot Royale rules above allow all stake levels on connected games to participate, but progressive awards can only be won in the Wheel King part of the bonus. Winning a regular prize, entering a bonus and winning a progressive jackpot are different outcomes.

A single game can also combine fixed prizes and a progressive prize. In NetEnt’s official Divine Fortune Gold description, Mini through Major pay multiples of the bet, while Mega is progressive. A ladder of jackpot names does not mean every tier grows with contributions.
Why doesn’t the meter return to zero after a win?
The return to a starting value is the reset. That value may be a specified seed plus money reserved for the next pool. Divine Fortune Gold gives a concrete example: 3.7% of the bet contributes to Mega, with 20% of that contribution reserved for the next jackpot. After an award, the new pool starts at €10,000 plus the reserve. The 20% applies to the contribution, not the full wager.
The displayed pool is a potential prize, not your withdrawable account balance. NetEnt notes that Divine Fortune Gold’s display can lag by up to 30 seconds and that progressive awards require verification. The displayed and settled amounts may therefore differ.

Does a jackpot cap mean it will pay soon?
A maximum pool amount and a must-hit-by threshold describe different conditions. A cap may simply stop the displayed amount from rising, with later contributions handled in another way, such as a reserve pool. The British Gambling Commission’s RTS 9 requires rules within its regulatory scope to explain what happens to contributions after a cap is reached. The word “cap” alone does not promise an immediate award.
Must-hit-by adds an explicit payout boundary. For example, Aristocrat’s 2023 announcement for the land-based Jackpot del Encanto Rapid system in Puerto Rico described a pool starting at US$30,000 that had to be won before US$45,000. Those figures belong to that particular system.
A must-hit-by boundary governs the pool’s award, not who wins it or whether a particular bet is profitable. Keep to your spending limit rather than chasing money already contributed.
