South Africa’s Top 50 Betting Brands: The Leaders, the Middle and the Wider Field

Hollywoodbets and Betway shared the lead in South Africa’s August 2026 brand-search estimates, ahead of a field with varied retail, media and technology models.

AskSpinner South Africa Top 50 casino brands market research report, August 2026.

Hollywoodbets and Betway were tied at 15 million estimated monthly brand searches in AskSpinner’s August 2026 South Africa research. That joint lead is striking, but it is not the whole story. The remaining names include corporate portfolios, media-linked ventures and businesses building on very different retail or technology foundations.

The Top 50 records estimated monthly brand-keyword searches in South Africa on August 20, 2026, not player counts, turnover or revenue. A separate Top 20 below presents a different, composite research measure.

South Africa’s National Gambling Board states that online casino gambling is prohibited; online betting such as sports and horse racing is permitted through South African-licensed bookmakers. This is industry research, not an endorsement of the legality of listed services.

South Africa: research top 10. From the 50-brand research list; est. monthly searches. Snapshot 20 Aug 2026.

Top 10 brands by estimated monthly branded searches in AskSpinner’s South Africa research list, 20 Aug 2026.

Hollywoodbets’ retail and digital history

Hollywoodbets and Betway shared the highest search estimate. Hollywoodbets opened its first Durban retail branch in 2000, launched its main website in 2006 and added a mobile site in 2009.

The company described retail branches, USSD, telephone and digital betting channels. Its distribution history therefore spans physical outlets and several forms of remote access.

Its digital offering also displayed Spina Zonke and Betgames content. Alongside the channel history, these categories help describe what the brand presented to visitors.

Betway’s place in South African football

Betway’s 15 million estimated searches sat alongside a major football agreement. In July 2024, the Premier Soccer League announced it as title sponsor of the premier division, renamed the Betway Premiership. The sponsorship made the brand part of the competition’s formal name.

For the 2024/25 season, SuperSport was scheduled to show all 240 fixtures across DStv, DStv Stream and Showmax Premier League, while SABC was to broadcast 23 matches. Those commitments describe the competition’s planned broadcast exposure that season.

YesPlay recorded 1.9 million estimated searches and LottoStar 1.5 million. Both presented substantial non-sports product ranges alongside the sports-led brands elsewhere in the list.

YesPlay displayed more than 100 lottery-style betting options, Betgames and Live Games alongside sports. LottoStar’s company history described a business founded in 2014 around fixed-odds numbers betting and live dealer products. These are historical descriptions of the offerings; the legal boundary in the introduction remains relevant.

Betfred acquired Betting World in 2021 and a majority stake in LottoStar in 2022. At the time of the LottoStar acquisition, Betfred already had 53 retail shops and an online presence in South Africa, having absorbed Betting World and Sepels.

Betfred recorded 275,000 searches, Betting World 15,000 and LottoStar 1.5 million. The acquisition history connects these separately listed brands within a wider group.

SunBet and SuperSportBet beyond the search totals

SunBet was fifth with 414,000 estimated searches and SuperSportBet eleventh with 136,000. Their disclosures add different operating histories to those positions.

Sun International’s 2025 disclosures reported 79.8% year-on-year growth in Sunbet income in the second half, alongside growth of more than 70% in active player days. Player days count accumulated days of activity, rather than unique players.

SuperSportBet entered beta in December 2023 and formally launched in January 2024. MultiChoice integrated it into pre-match television programming and live broadcast signals, and secured partnerships with Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Aviator followed in July 2024; MultiChoice subsequently credited that addition with accelerating wagering turnover. These were the media and product initiatives described in its reporting.

The middle of the list

The middle ranks included Easybet at 326,000 searches, Supabets at 274,000, 10Bet at 167,000, World Sports Betting at 156,000, Gbets at 116,000 and Sportingbet at 112,000. ZARbet recorded 74,000, Playabets 71,000, Interbet 62,000, Lottoland 46,000 and BetXchange 39,000.

A November 2023 announcement described 10Bet’s community-football collaboration with Golden Arrows. In August 2024, it also announced Betgames live and RNG content. The two announcements document a local sports initiative and a content-supply agreement.

Gbets operates as the Goldrush group’s sports betting arm. Alongside Gbets’ 116,000 searches, Goldrush had a separate estimate of 25,000. As with the Betfred-related entries, different brand names can sit within one corporate network.

PlayTsogo and the smaller search totals

PlayTsogo stood forty-first with 4,200 estimated monthly searches. Nearby were SportPesa and Lulabets at 4,700 each, Pokerbet at 4,500 and Lotto247 at 4,200.

In January 2024, development agency Vegas Kings published a case study of its design and development work for Tsogo Sun’s playTSOGO, built on a Playtech backend. Pragmatic Play then announced a September 2024 slot-supply partnership, naming Sugar Rush and Gates of Olympus 1000 among the games.

PlayTsogo’s development and supplier records give one concrete example of the businesses in the lower ranks. The full table keeps those smaller brands visible alongside the two leaders.

A separate view: the composite Top 20

This separate Top 20 uses a composite research index rather than the brand-search totals in the main Top 50. The two tables describe different aspects of visibility and should not be read as interchangeable rankings.

Summary

Hollywoodbets and Betway shared the highest search estimate, but the full list includes distinct retail histories, league naming rights, acquisitions, media integrations and supplier contracts. Those records explain the businesses behind the names, while the tables preserve their different levels of measured visibility.

Research methodology

The August 20, 2026 study covered 88 operator entities, using National Gambling Board records as a licensing reference. Ahrefs provided South Africa-specific brand-search estimates for the Top 50. The separate Top 20 combines brand demand with estimated organic traffic, non-brand visibility, keyword coverage and recent traffic changes. These are search-visibility measures, not estimates of betting revenue or market share.
