What Is House Edge? The Casino’s Mathematical Advantage

House edge describes a game’s expected casino advantage over wagers. The guide shows the fixed-RTP calculation and separates that expectation from an individual session.

House edge is the casino's theoretical mathematical advantage, expressed as a percentage of the relevant wagers. A 4% edge means an expected loss of 4 units for each 100 units wagered under the model's assumptions, not a fixed charge or the result of every round.

The Gambling Commission’s explanation of house edge describes the average share a casino expects to retain under normal play. The actual result of a short session can be far above or below that expectation.

How does house edge relate to RTP?

For a slot with fixed theoretical RTP, calculated on the same wager basis and under the same rules:

House edge = 100% − RTP

98%2%
96%4%
94%6%

These are arithmetic examples, not ratings of named games. The 96% return and 4% edge describe the player and casino sides of the same expectation.

The percentages apply to total wagers, not the original deposit. If you deposit ₱1,000 and re-bet returned money, your total wagers can exceed ₱1,000. For a hypothetical fixed 4% edge and ₱5,000 of planned wagers, the mathematical expected loss is ₱200. The peso amounts are examples only, not a forecast of a player's balance.

Where does the advantage come from?

House edge is built into the rules, outcome probabilities and payouts. It is not normally an extra deduction made after every round. For slots, the relevant model includes the symbols, paytable and features. Roulette depends on the wheel and payout odds. In blackjack, both the rules and player decisions can affect the expected return.

Do not transfer a percentage from one game version, bet type or strategy to another. Side bets, optional features and separately charged modes may have their own mathematical basis.

What can house edge tell you?

All else equal, a lower edge means a lower expected loss per unit wagered. It does not show who will win the next round or how sharply a balance may fluctuate. Volatility and the size and frequency of payouts describe other parts of the game.

A player can win during a session even when the game has a positive house edge. Equally, continuing to play does not make earlier losses repayable. Use the figure to understand the expected cost of wagers, not as a schedule for future results.
