How Blackjack Works: Hands, Table Rules and Peso Stakes
Blackjack is played against the dealer: aim for a higher hand total without going over 21. You can win with 19 against a dealer’s 18; you do not need to reach exactly 21. The choices you make during a hand can also increase the stake, which matters when choosing a table for a Philippine peso budget.
This guide follows a hand from the opening cards to settlement, explains the cost of splitting and doubling, and helps you compare the games in this Philippines directory. CasinoPlus’s live formats and OkadaOnline’s virtual multi-hand listings offer different starting points for that comparison.
Understand your cards before choosing an action
Cards from two to ten count at face value, and jacks, queens and kings are worth ten. An ace can count as one or eleven. A hand is soft when an ace is counted as eleven: ace plus six is a soft 17. Add a ten and the ace counts as one, making a hard 17 instead of a bust.
A hard hand has no ace counted as eleven. Ten plus seven and ace plus six plus ten are therefore both hard 17. This is why a table can give the dealer different instructions for two hands that both total 17.
A natural blackjack is an ace and a ten-value card in the initial two-card hand. Reaching 21 with three or more cards is an ordinary 21. A 21 made after splitting is also generally treated separately from an initial blackjack, so those hands should not automatically be assigned the natural-blackjack payout.
Follow one hand from the deal to settlement
A conventional round starts with two cards for the player and a visible dealer upcard. The procedure for the dealer’s second card varies by version. During your turn, the controls determine what happens next:
- Hit: take another card.
- Stand: keep your total and end your turn.
- Double down: increase the wager, normally to twice the original stake, and receive only one more card. The table determines which hands qualify.
- Split: turn an eligible pair into two separate hands, normally by adding another stake. Rules for further splits, doubling after a split and split aces vary.
- Surrender: where offered, end the hand under the table’s conditions and recover part of the original wager, commonly half.
Once the players finish, the dealer follows the table’s fixed drawing rules. Under standard rules, a higher surviving player total wins and a lower one loses; equal totals normally push, returning the stake. Going over 21 is a bust. If you bust first, a later dealer bust does not return your wager.
Insurance, commonly offered when the dealer shows an ace, is a separate bet on the dealer having blackjack. It can settle differently from your main hand and does not guarantee the return of your original stake. Pairs and card-combination side bets likewise have their own conditions and should be counted separately from the main wager.
Work out the full cost of a hand in pesos
The opening chip may be only part of the amount committed. The example below starts with ₱100 and assumes the table allows the stated actions, with the usual equal additional stake for a split or double. It excludes side bets and feature fees, and is not a quoted minimum for a listed game.
| What happens to the opening ₱100 hand | Total stake at risk |
|---|---|
| Play one hand without splitting or doubling | ₱100 |
| Double that hand | ₱200 |
| Split into two ₱100 hands | ₱200 |
| Split, then double both resulting hands | ₱400 |
Multi-hand games add another consideration. Placing ₱100 on each of three active hands commits ₱300 at the start, before any permitted splits, doubles or optional wagers. Count every active hand against your session limit. A casino’s minimum top-up and a game’s minimum stake describe different amounts.
Compare the whole rule set, including the blackjack payout
A natural-blackjack payout of 3:2 means ₱150 in winnings on a hypothetical ₱100 bet; 6:5 means ₱120. In each example, the original stake is also returned, giving ₱250 or ₱220 in total. The ₱30 difference applies to a winning natural under those payout rules. Ordinary winning hands, pushes and side bets have their own settlement rules.
That ratio is one part of the comparison. Before choosing a version, use its rules or Help panel to answer the rest:
- Dealer drawing: does the dealer stand on all 17s or hit soft 17?
- Dealing procedure: how many decks are used, and when does the dealer check for blackjack?
- Player options: which hands can double or split, and what restrictions apply after splitting aces?
- Special features: are there extra fees, multipliers or altered dealer outcomes, and when do they apply?
A free-double or free-split feature has its own qualifying conditions. Check those alongside the rest of the rules before treating a feature game as conventional blackjack. Any published RTP is a theoretical figure tied to the rules and assumptions about play, rather than a forecast for your session.
Use the catalogue to compare specific blackjack versions
American Blackjack and European Blackjack, both from Nucleus Gaming, are separate entries in the directory. Open the version you want, keep its full title and provider in view, and use its in-game rules to establish the dealing and settlement differences.
Infinite Free Bet Blackjack takes the comparison in a different direction. Evolution’s Free Bet range offers qualifying free doubles and splits, while the Infinite format accommodates an unlimited number of players. “Free Bet” describes the format; your opening wager and any other costs still need to be understood. It does not promise a cash bonus or a risk-free session.
Choose between live tables and a virtual multi-hand layout
CasinoPlus is a starting point for named live blackjack formats. Its public catalogue lists Infinite Blackjack, Lightning Blackjack and Blackjack Party. At CasinoPlus, compare the named table’s payout, feature rules and current minimum stake. A listing alone does not establish those terms.
Live blackjack follows a shared dealing pace and a decision timer. On a phone, locate Hit, Stand, Double and Split before the hand begins. Read what the game does after a missed decision or lost connection; a frozen video does not by itself cancel an accepted wager.
OkadaOnline is relevant if you want to inspect a virtual multi-hand layout. The virtual-table catalogue at OkadaOnline lists Blackjack 3 Hand and Blackjack Double Exposure 3 Hand, with demo options shown. A labelled demo can help you understand the controls and hand layout before considering a peso stake. Demo credits are separate from a withdrawable balance.
Read the Double Exposure rules separately, and count the stake on each active hand. An animated presentation still needs a clearly understood rule set. For either casino, confirm the exact version, peso denomination and current access conditions before deciding to play.
If you would rather explore a card game with fixed drawing rules, our baccarat games and rules page explains Player, Banker and third-card dealing. Keep gambling within a fixed entertainment budget, and stop rather than increasing stakes to recover losses.
Blackjack FAQs
You play your hand against the dealer, aiming for a higher total without exceeding 21. Hit takes another card and stand ends your turn. The dealer then follows the table’s fixed drawing rules, and the hand is settled under that version’s rules.
It can count as either. A hand is soft when an ace is counted as eleven, such as ace plus six for soft 17. If another card would make that total exceed 21, the ace can count as one instead.
No. A natural blackjack is an ace and a ten-value card in the initial two-card hand. Reaching 21 with additional cards is an ordinary 21, and a 21 after splitting is generally treated separately from a natural.
No. The payout for a natural blackjack depends on the table, and some versions use 6:5 or other conditions. Check the displayed paytable. Main-hand winnings, blackjack winnings and side-bet payouts are different categories.
It depends on the table. Some rules require the dealer to stand on every 17; others require a hit on soft 17. Look for the stated dealer rule instead of assuming all blackjack versions use the same one.
No. Insurance is a separate wager that the dealer has blackjack. It can win or lose independently of the main hand, so it should not be read as a guarantee that your original stake is protected.
